I ordered this laptop with ubuntu, but was frustrated that a number of its features are not implemented under ubuntu. After more than a year of running it with Linux I switched to Vista, and now have capabilities on the machine I had always wished for, like full hdmi out (I can now stream hd video from laptop to my big Sony TV.)

I continue to Linux on my older more modestly powered machines.

I was surprised how much of the hardware was recognized when Vista installed. Microsoft is getting better, it seems.

@Gerhard - I had heard a rumour about this, but there were still a couple of laptops on the UK site last time I looked. I'll check again now. I know the US site has a choice of 5 different Ubuntu machines, the UK site used to have 3 at it's peak. Now I think they have less. In other European countries there's usually nothing. Were you looking at the German site or the UK one?

Edit: Ok I just checked and it seems Dell have redesigned their UK website. The only Ubuntu machine I can find it the Mini 10 netbook. No laptops or desktops at all, that sucks :(

@ben Yeah I know a few people have succeeded in getting refunds out of Dell for the Windows tax. It's a good option. Nice work with those school machines! People are always resistant to change, I bet in time that person will get used to OpenOffice and just use that instead. Good solution installing it in a VM though :)

I'd be a little annoyed at the missing hardware from the Vista package - I'd like to buy the Vista package, then tell Dell I need a refund because I don't wanna agree.

They could always replace it with a Ubuntu machine free of charge - but EULA for Vista states they will refund - in England this is easy to enforce. Maybe it's not worth the hassle, but I like to be bloody awkward when faced by fascism on this scale.

As for SCHOOL use - I just installed Ubuntu on three machines in my school. One secretary complained about lack of MS Word, so with her machine (licenced already for XP) I reinstalled her XP in virtualbox, and then installed Word there - she's happy - but I noticed she's using Open Office more.

Cool.

I would say so, depends what you mean by school use. I know a lot of schools use Windows-only software, I would use Linux as your main OS and run any Windows software safely in a virtual machine if you need to, best of both worlds :)
