I was trying to get Arch to work and had a few problems with it so I dropped the thing a while back. I installed Chakra and like it pretty well. Then I found the archiso-live handled by godane. It is a revelation to me. Arch made easy and it is working pretty well. Just a couple of things not handled but he seems to be very responsive to questions and fixes it up as it goes along. It seems to be very much like Chakra but for xfce. I am very pleased with it.

I agree with the previous commenter on Wolvix. I think they are doing a great job with that distro. Very responsive and they are also working hard to make it as good as possible. I am very impressed with that one.

Another one I like and it is 64-bit based is BlueWhite64/ 64-bit Slackware. Another one that the developers pay attention to the users. I have yet to have a question that was not answered within a couple of days.

These 3 distros really seem to me to be the ones I will be keeping at this point. Good response from the developers and the changes they make all seem to be responsible choices for realistic reasons and not just make it PR-worthy.

@eye-only - Thanks for reading. I'm really glad if you found it useful or at least entertaining. Linux Mint is a very nice distro for any newcomers to Linux in general I think. It's always worked well for me but I'd better not spoil the full review by saying more just yet :P Thanks for the kind wishes as well, I'm doing pretty well at the moment but sad too hear you are not feeling as good. I hope that changes for you ASAP! Take care of yourself.

Hi Dan!

I REALLY appreciated your review of Chakra! I've been waiting for an in-depth review such as yours for quite some time now, and knowing your style and honesty in reviews, was hoping it'd be you. And my wish came true. How about that? ;)

I think I'd like to give it a trial run moreso though when it becomes a beta or an RC. I've reached that point now in my life ( and I think you know to what I refer? ) where software hassles and bugs are becoming just a little "too demanding" of my current abilities. Such is life...

For reviews? I'd really love reading one on LM-7 "Gloria" as well! I've been looking at the screenies of it Dan and just drooling over what they've done with the theme! I ran version 4 so perhaps it's becoming time to clean a seldom-used partition? ;) I'd like to read your Fedora-11 as well, despite the fact that I never could get into that distro. I think it's just "too bleeding edge" for me - and this coming from someone who comfortably ran sidux for a year!

Re: Wolvix-2.0b2: I've been running that for awhile now and basically, I feel anyway, that what Wolven & Oithona have done has been to upgrade 1.1.0 with newly-updated software, kernel, XFCE DE, graphics, while by-and-large it's the same "Hunter and Cub" under the hood as far as programmes go. I hope that helped? But by all means! - Do check it out as it surely IS a worthy distro not receiving anywhere NEAR the amount of coverage and accolades it deserves!

I hope that this finds you feeling far, far better Dan with your "good days" way outnumbering your "off-days". Sadly, I can't say the same...

Amicalement/Cheers!

Kounryusui - Thanks for the suggestion. I reviewed an earlier version of Wolvix last year but I'd like to see how it's changed since. I compared it to Vector Linux and Zenwalk at the time as they are all Slackware based distros with an XFCE desktop. I'll try and take another look :)

Nice writing, Dan; thanks for an excellent review. I think I learned about the Chakra project on this blog here (a link in the Arch Linux review article) - it certainly looks interesting and worth keeping an eye on in the future. Personally I got burned when I tried KDE 4 last time and I don't think that having another go at it with an alpha stage distro would be a terribly brilliant idea. But I promised myself to get back to it some day, yes... :]
Linux Mint 7 and Fedora 11 look like very good choices for future review (unless the Fedora devs pull the Debian trick on us and keep postponing the final release ad infinitum, he he).
As for suggestions, there is one that looks interesting, at least to me, - Wolvix - they are into betas of ver. 2.0 so I am waiting for the final. It's sort of a hobby style distro with only 2 developers behind it but it just refuses to die, contradicting my expectations. I like the motto they have on their homepage, just under the logo :)))

I agree that KDEMod seems to be the best implementation of KDE4... I tried Chakra a month(?) or so ago. I personally just can't get into KDE, no matter how much I try. Congrats to the Chakra people, though. :) Looking forward to the possible Fedora 11 review.

Cheers,

@Epicanis - Shaman is pretty cool, there's a lot of information about it on the Arch wiki too.

I put Arch on my EeePC 901 (Would have used Gentoo, but I didn't think the frequent re-writing from the compile processes would be good for the SSD...), and am using the Chakra project's kdemod packages. It's working great for me so far.

I hadn't known about Shaman...thanks for the pointer.
