September 13th, 2009Update
It’s time for another Weekly Rewind. It’s number 31 and I have no jokes or comments to make about that sorry. I must try harder. Nothing to see here, move along. It’s been quite an eventful week as it happens, lots to discuss. So let’s do that right now.On Monday I processed and released the 8th episode of Rathole Radio. It always takes longer than I imagine doing show notes and other things, but I got it out by late afternoon. It’s been well received which is always satisfying. I wrote and published the previous Weekly Rewind, then moved on to preparing for Linux Outlaws recording in the evening. We recorded episode 110 and streamed it live as usual. There were some weird problems with netsplits on Freenode. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what it was either. It’s basically remote servers losing connection to each other if I’ve read it right. It meant that the IRC channel went from 120 people to 4 in a few seconds. It went up and down a lot during the show. Despite this we got through and everyone enjoyed it I think. The resulting episode was released on Wednesday night, after another sterling editing job by Fab. Read the rest of this entry »

September 11th, 2009Event
Ok folks it’s a multimedia feast on the blog this week. Hot on the heels of the video yesterday I have the audio trailer for OggCamp. We played it on Linux Outlaws 110 and it can be found on the official OggCamp site but as you know, if something needs pimping, I can’t resist. You can get your own copy of the trailer right here. If you have a podcast or you’re running an event please consider playing it and helping us, we’d really appreciate it. Or you could just play it very loudly in your car or on your stereo at home to help spread the word. As long as the police and the neighbours don’t mind that is of course. We tried to make this funny and as you will hear I had a field day with the sound effects. It’s a bit like a radio play, all be it a short one. This is mark one of the trailer as I’m still waiting to add a couple of lines from Ciemon when we have them. That should be done next week and then I’ll update the file.
So have a listen and see what you think. Thanks for your support

September 10th, 2009Audio Production, VideoI have something of a treat for you today. Well, I hope it will prove to be a treat anyway. It’s the long awaited video from my talk to the Manchester Free Software group in July. Not surprisingly it was in Manchester, at the Lass O’Gowrie pub. It’s just over 2 months since I made the talk, but I finally have the video for you all to see. Big thanks to Tim Dobson for taking this video, editing it and even uploading it to Archive.org, he deserves all the credit for that. Thank you also to Lucy for inviting me to speak, and most of all, thanks to the 30 odd people who crammed themselves into the smallest room known to man. It was hot, stuffy and not always so comfortable but I think it went well. It was great too see so many people there.
In this talk I take you through how I produce podcasts like the Software Freedom Law Show using only Free Software and Open Source solutions. Sound engineering is something I’ve done for a long time and it’s a real passion of mine. I hope that comes across in the talk. As you can see there wasn’t even a projector in the room, so I’m just using my laptop to try and show the slides to everyone. If you have any questions please feel free to post them in the comments here and I’ll do my best to answer them.
You can find the slides I used here, if you want a closer look.
I’ve embedded the video player from Archive.org but I also advise downloading the original Ogg Theora file. It looks slightly better. Hope you enjoy the talk, thanks
Dan
P.S – I haven’t actually watched this fully myself yet as I’m too nervous. Stupid I know because it’s in the past now but it still feels odd. I’ll be sitting down to watch it soon. I have to know what I said in case people ask questions anyway

September 7th, 2009Update
A slightly late Weekly Rewind this time but it’s the big “three oh”; that’s 30, in case you didn’t pick up the phonetics. It’s been an odd week really, I didn’t get as much done as I wanted to, but interesting stuff still happened somehow. So let’s get into it…On Monday it was Linux Outlaws as usual, with a great audience packed into the IRC channel for the live show. It’s really good to interact with people in the chat room as the show goes on. Mainly because they can correct us when we’re talking rubbish but shhh
On Tuesday I began editing the show and also took my car to the garage to replace the blown out tire from last week. I ended up editing some of the podcast while sat in the waiting room with my laptop. I got strange looks from the mechanics and other people wandering past the window as I sat there with my HUGE headphones on, but I got a fair bit done and it was worth it. I also managed to drop well over £100 on 2 new tires. I’m useless when I go to garages, I always get fleeced. I know nothing about cars and engines, nothing, nada. They might as well be talking Greek, but like a typical bloke I’m not about to admit to that. “It’s your grubnuts mate, ooh that’s gonna be expensive”, “I was thinking it was the grubnuts yeah”. After spending a load of money I didn’t really have on some of the finest tires known to man, complete with lifetime guarentee, I remembered that the car’s going on the scrapage scheme in a month or so. The tires are probably worth more than the bloody car now!! I’ll be taking them off before it goes to the scrap heap, that’s for sure.
