Hi I’m Dan Lynch, a writer, musician, producer and convicted geek from Merseyside in the UK. I’m mad about all things open source, particularly GNU/Linux but also BSD and various web/mobile technologies. I do a bit of programming and web development. I’m a big fan of Django (the Python web framework) and I do a lot of Drupal stuff these days. I used to work for the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK as a .NET developer. I know, it’s so hideously closed source and proprietary but we’ve all made mistakes in our lives right? These days I make most of my living out of talking, which you’ll soon realise if you linger here for any length of time.

    Podcasting:

I do a few different podcasts and podcasting is something that’s become a really big part of my life. I co-host Linux Outlaws which has done very well. We’ve only been going since 2007 and in that time we’ve become one of the top Linux podcasts which I still can’t quite believe sometimes. We’ve been really lucky to talk to some big names in the Open Source world such as Miguel de Icaza, Bradley Kuhn, Jono BaconRandal Schwartz, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Jeremy Allison, Steve McIntyre (Debian Project Leader), Evan Prodromu and many many more. I also put my audio skills and general sound geekery to good use producing a podcast for the Software Freedom Law Center in New York. It’s a bi-weekly show about legal matters in the FLOSS world, presented by Bradley Kuhn and Karen Sandler. I’m really pleased to be working with such a well known and in my view important group in the Free Software world today.

Adventures In Open Source – The Back Story:
I began blogging very late really in the evolution of the medium, what can I say I’m at the cutting edge of fashion ;) It all started in early 2007 when I signed up for Blogger and began what I thought would be a personal blog. Over time with the dawn of Linux Outlaws and my continued distro hopping things changed. Somehow my reviews were picked up by Distrowatch and a number of other popular Linux sites, the readership went up and I was soon offered paid writing work. I hadn’t planned any of this and it was all a really nice surprise. I’ve continued to write both here and on other sites, it’s something I really enjoy doing and I’m grateful that others seem to enjoy it too. It occurred to me as 2009 rolled around that I shouldn’t be blogging about Open Source on a closed platform like Blogger, it was a contradiction. So I upped sticks and moved to WordPress on my own server. That’s what you’re looking at right now. I had the domain name adventuresinopensource.com registered for a while and I initially set the new blog up under that, but people told me the address was too long and I quickly realised they were right. I also had danlynch.org lying dormant and it seemed stupid not to use it, so now the blog is based at danlynch.org/blog but the other domains will still lead you here if you prefer. I plan to use danlynch.org as a proper base of operations in the future for music, writing, broadcasting, development and anything else I do. At the time of writing the main site needs a lot of work, I have Drupal installed and I’ll hopefully be improving this in the near future.

    Feedback:
Thanks for reading this and thanks to everyone out there who’s supported me in all my endeavours, I really do appreciate the fine people I’ve met and conversed with, both in person and online. I just hope I can give something back. If you have any ideas, criticisms, rants, suggestions or… well, anything really, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can leave comments here on the blog or send emails via the contact form at danlynch.org/contact

Stalk me if you like (in a nice way though):
I was also pretty late into all this social media business as everyone calls it, but I’ve been a pretty active microblogger since early 2007. You can keep up with me in the following places:

I look forward to hearing from you, bye for now

    Dan
