About Me

A picture of me (looking a bit scary people tell me)
Hi I’m Dan Lynch, a 29 year old writer, musician, broadcaster, producer and convicted geek from Merseyside in the UK. I’m mad about all things open source, particularly GNU/Linux but also BSD, OpenSolaris and various web/mobile technologies. I do a bit of programming and web development but haven’t done any really meaty projects in a while. I used to work for the NHS (National Health Service) as a .NET developer; I know, it’s so hideously closed source and proprietary but we’ve all made mistakes in our lives right? These days I make most of my living out of talking, which you’ll soon realise if you linger here for any length of time.
Podcasting:
I do a few different podcasts and podcasting is something that’s become a large part of my life. I co-host Linux Outlaws which has been doing pretty well. We’ve only been going since 2007 but in that time we’ve become one of the top Linux podcasts which I still can’t quite believe sometimes. We’ve been really lucky to talk to some big names in the open source world such as Miguel de Icaza, Bradley Kuhn, Jono Bacon, Steve McIntyre (Debian Project Leader), Evan Prodromu and many many more. I also put my audio skills and general sound geekery to good use producing a podcast for the Software Freedom Law Center in New York. It’s a bi-weekly show about legal matters in the FLOSS world presented by Bradley Kuhn and Karen Sandler from the SFLC. I’m really pleased to be working with such a well known and in my view important group in the FLOSS world today.
Adventures In Open Source – The Back Story:
I began blogging very late really in the evolution of the medium, what can I say I’m at the cutting edge of fashion
It all started in early 2007 when I signed up for Blogger and began what I thought would be a personal blog but over time with the dawn of Linux Outlaws and my continued distro hopping things changed. Somehow my reviews were picked up by Distrowatch and a number of other popular Linux sites, the readership went up and I was soon offered paid writing work. I hadn’t planned any of this and it was all a really nice surprise. I’ve continued to write both here and on other sites, it’s something I really enjoy doing and I’m grateful that others seem to enjoy it too. It occurred to me that as 2009 rolled around I shouldn’t be blogging about open source on a closed platform like Blogger any more, it was a bit of a contradiction. So I upped sticks and moved to Wordpress on my own server. That’s what you’re looking at right now. I had the domain name adventuresinopensource.com registered for a while and I initially set the new blog up under that address but people told me the URL was too long and I quickly realised they were right. I also had danlynch.org lying dormant and it seemed stupid not to use it, so now the blog is based at danlynch.org/blog but the other domains will still lead you to the right place if you prefer. I plan to use danlynch.org as a proper base of operations in the future for music, writing, broadcasting, development and everything else I do. At the time of writing though the main site needs a lot of work, I have Drupal installed and I’ll hopefully be improving this in the near future.Feedback:
Thanks for reading this and thanks to everyone out there who’s supported me in all my endeavours t date, I really do appreciate the fine people I’ve met and conversed with both in person and online. I just hope I can give something back, I strive to do that with every project I take on. If you have any ideas, criticisms, rants, suggestions or… well, anything really please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can leave comments here on the blog or send emails via the contact form at danlynch.org/contactStalk me if you like (in a nice way I hope):
