Mandriva 2008 Is Out… Does Anyone Care?
The new version of French Linux distribution Mandriva has just been released, it’s titled Mandriva 2008 and is available to download for free now. I have downloaded the 1 CD version which comes with KDE and I plan to test it out on my system and report back. As I’ve mentioned on this blog before I used to use Mandriva a fair bit from the days when it was still called Mandrake, I have a soft spot for it but I fear it’s time has now come and gone. In many ways it should have been in the position Ubuntu is now but they somehow missed the boat and are now fighting to regain a lot of users who have since moved on, like myself.
So I’ll try it out and keep an open mind then report back. KDE is not my favourite desktop platform but I’ve used it without problems in the past and I’m sure I can again. I plan to put Mandriva on my machine for a day or 2 and then move to Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon in the days before the final release to test it out. Stay tuned and we’ll see how this turns out…
I’m backing up my /home directory first though just to be safe, I’m not that crazy 😉
